Who we are and what we do
The Marche Regional Government was set up in 1970 in a move to decentralise power from Rome to Italy's 20 regions. It carries out a wide series of legislative, administrative and executive functions. Its constitution, which came into force in 1971, creates an autonomous regional government with powers exercised within the limits of the Italian Constitution.

The Giunta Regionale
The Regional Government is ruled by the Giunta Regionale, or Ruling Group, made up of an elected president and eight assessori or councillors appointed with special responsibilities over each of the regional departments. Its powers include:

presenting draft regional laws and regulations to the Consiglio Regionale

carrying out the decisions of the Consiglio Regionale

drawing up the Regional Plan and Budget

co-ordinating the activities of each of the regional departments.

The Consiglio Regionale
The Consiglio Regionale or regional council is made up of elected councillors who appoint their own Council President. Its powers include:

appointing the Regional President and members of the Giunta Regionale (see above)

passing regional laws

deciding regional political, social and economic policies

proposing laws for the Italian national parliament

approving the regional budget

approving regional development schemes

appointing members of the Permanent Regional Commissions*

*The Permanent Regional Commissions are bodies set up to examine regional policies in various areas of responsibility and to draw up proposals for Regional Laws.
