Tracing Your Roots
Genealogical research is never easy and is often best carried out by making a personal visit to the place where your ancestors originated and talking to surviving relatives. This way it can also be fun.

However, even if you can't make it to the Marche you can do some research from home. Here we have put together a few useful pointers which we hope will help you. But do remember that public offices are busy places and have little time to do complex historical research on your behalf - try and get as much precise detail as possible before approaching them and bear in mind that they speak Italian not English, so translate any correspondence you send.

Getting hold of documents:
Since the Unification of Italy in around 1870, all registers of births, deaths and marriages have been kept by individual Italian "Comuni". The "Comune" is the basic unit of Italian local government and is the equivalent of the "town or city council". The office responsibile in each "Comune" for keeping these records is called the "Ufficio Anagrafe".

Therefore, if you're looking for certificates of birth, marriage or death, you must contact the ufficio anagrafe of the comune concerned. You'll need the full name of the person your researching and the date of the birth, marriage or death. If you haven't got the precise details (for example just the year of birth rather than exact date) it may be harder to trace, especially if the comune in question is a larger town or city.

Enquiries should be addressed to:
Ufficio Anagrafe
Comune di (place)

To find the correct post code (C.A.P.) and province of the comune in question, one of the best resources is the Italian web site Non Solo CAP . To search for the post code of any comune follow the image link for each province, or go to the home page of this site.

The web site Virgilio www.virgilio.it also has an excellent database of detailed maps of Italy - just follow the "mappe" link from the home page. Incidentally, there are four provinces in the Marche, from north to south:

  • Pesaro & Urbino - (PS) recently changed to (PU)
  • Ancona - (AN)
  • Macerata - (MC)
  • Ascoli Piceno - (AP)
Wordlist:
