Taddeo Zuccari (1529-66) and Federico Zuccari (c.1540-1609)

The Zuccari brothers mark the end of the Mannerist tradition in Rome, of which Taddeo was a leading exponent. They were both born in the Sant' Angelo in Vado but moved away from the Marche at an early age to establish their careers in Rome.

Taddeo is best known for his fresco cycle in the Sala Regia in the Vatican and the Farnese Deeds at the Villa Farnese in Caprarola, near Viterbo. By 1574, Federico had moved on to France, Antwerp and London, before returning to work in the Vatican and to complete Vasari's unfinished frescoes in Florence Cathedral. In 1593, he established the Academia di San Luca in Rome, where he became principal, devoting his last years to the theory of art.
